Christiansburg spay-neuter clinic to ask for county help again

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA -

For the last nine months, it has been a program that has seen results. More than 1,100 friendly felines have been fixed at Mountain View Humane's Waldron-Ricci Spay Neuter Clinic in Christiansburg.

"The fact that Montgomery County doesn't currently have a cat shelter means that we do have a higher stray population here in theory, and so we want to do everything we can to lower that," said Kelly Cass, with Mountain View Humane Clinic.

Montgomery County supervisors worked together with the clinic last year in hopes of reducing the unwanted pet population, not only in their community, but in the entire New River Valley.

"It makes sense to really invest money in the clinic and what they do," said Mary Biggs, a member of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.

Last year the board gave them $30,000 to spay and neuter cats. As far as this year goes, Cass says any little amount will help.

"We'd like to have as much as we can have to help as many animals as we can help."

While nothing will be decided Tuesday night, Biggs hopes they can help out again.

"We'll come back and see if there are one time monies, that's what we did last year, one time monies that aren't part of our regular budget that we can contribute to different situations and this would be one that I would highly recommend that we put money into."

All of this to keep spay and neuter costs low so nearly everyone in the community can afford the surgery .

Currently, costs are $7 for male cats, and $12 for females.
