Homeland security seizes hundreds of counterfeit gun accessories in Cary

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Agents working with homeland security confiscated scores of fake gun parts from the home of a Cary woman as part of what sources tell WNCN is a larger investigation.

Using search warrants, agents swept through Jennifer Tan's home and seized scores of items from her garage.

"I sell lights, lasers and scopes," Tan told WNCN's Steve Sbraccia when he went to her home to ask about the raid.

Tan said she buys the items on the Internet and then resells them at places like gun shows.

"I don't know what they are for," she said. "I put it on the table. Whoever needs it, they take it."

The documents allege Tan is "engaged in an ongoing criminal business to import and distribute counterfeit items such as gun sights."

Tan, who says she is a nurse by trade, says she sells the items as a hobby.

"I'm just doing it for fun," she told WNCN.  "When I have time a little bit, I go there."

WNCN wanted to know more about the items listed on the warrants so we took the documents to a North Raleigh gun shop.

"Some of the items I've seen on the list are very high-end items," said manager Justin Card. "Some of the rifle scopes that Trijicon manufactures for the military and civilian market can range in price from $1,200 to 2 or $3,000 dollars depending on which model you go with."

Card says there's a big business in counterfeit gun accessories.

"China is doing a lot of work to influx the U.S. market with counterfeit products like that," he explained.

Jennifer Tan claims she didn't know items she was selling were fake.

According to Card, if the confiscated items on the warrant were legit, they'd be worth a lot of money.

"You're probably talking close to $100,000 worth of merchandise these people were trying to traffic," he said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the raid.

Meanwhile, sources say the probe is continuing.
