Allergy symptoms spring up despite cold

ROANOKE, VA -

It may feel like winter even though it's spring but your allergies may remind you of that.

Some trees like cedar and maples have already starting blooming and pollinating and if that's what you're allergic to, you're likely already feeling the effects. Don't despair, there is a way to manage the suffering.

If your allergies haven't kicked in, allergists say getting ahead of the symptoms is the best way to get through it. Dr. Dane McBride of Asthma and Allergy Center in Roanoke tells me there are three ways to do that. You can start by avoiding what you're allergic to. Staying indoors when pollen levels are high and leaving your windows closed will help. "It's very helpful if you're driving in your car to have the windows up and put the ventilation on re-circulate so you're not bringing in fresh air from the outside while you drive," McBride said.

Another option is taking medication a nasal spray or an over-the-counter, non-sedating antihistamine like Zyrtec, Allegra or Claritin.

You can also consider seeing a doctor for a more permanent solution like allergy shots. "It is the only one that makes you not allergic anymore," said McBride. "When people have a lot of problems with allergies they really should see an allergist and become desensitized so the problems don't continue for years and years."

if you choose to take medication, McBride suggests starting two weeks before the pollen starts in order to have a milder season.
