TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A manatee calf was rescued Wednesday, Manatee Appreciation Day (the last Wednesday of March), from Bayboro Harbor in St. Petersburg.   The 90-pound male orphan was brought to the David A. Straz Jr. Manatee hospital at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo suffering from cold stress.  He is currently resting in a heated shallow water medical pool, and will receive around-the-clock care.

Officials say the manatee has taken a Pedialyte bottle from animal care staff, and has a good nursing response.  His body temperature was low upon arrival, but has improved, and he appears more comfortable now in slightly deeper water.
