Mayors group plans push for gun legislation

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gun control is a controversial issue that has supporters and opponents at odds around the nation and here in North Carolina.

The Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition scheduled a news conference at 10:30 a.m. in Durham featuring mayors from Chapel Hill, Durham and Morrisville and a survivor of gun violence.

A candlelight vigil was planned in Moore Square in Raleigh at 6:30 p.m. Featured speakers include Jen Geurin Ferrell, founder of Forward Americans, and Kim Erickson Yaman, a citizen lobbyist and witness to 1991 University of Iowa shootings.

The organization released an ad to get out their message urging Congress to take action to strengthen background checks, and planned events around the nation Thursday.

The organization, along with other groups formed the National Day to Demand Action featuring hundreds of mayors, law enforcement, faith leaders and gun violence survivors.

The ads do not mention assault weapons or magazine clips, which likely won't be included in the broad gun bill Senate democrats will introduce.

The mayors group expects Thursday to be the largest event of its kind in history "part of the largest field campaign" in U.S. history to address gun violence.

North Carolina is a key state in which they've opened campaign offices and hired organizers.

The bill likely to be considered by the Senate in April would include less partisan measures like tougher laws on gun trafficking and school safety provisions

Universal background checks is a stickier issue, but Americans overwhelmingly back it , no matter their political affiliation, according to surveys.
