LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

Authorities say James Houston Black, Jr. has been charged with Attempted 1st degree murder of a Law Enforcement Officer. Other charges are pending the conclusion of this investigation. Black was released from Lakeland Regional Medical Center and is currently at the Polk County Jail.

Officer Glass was released from Lakeland Regional Medical Center and is currently on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

Thursday at approximately 3:00 p.m., Lakeland Community Response Team officers and Special Investigations Section members were conducting a joint operation.  Authorities say, officers performed a traffic stop on a newer model Chevrolet Avalanche driven by 39-year-old James Houston Black, Jr. at 92 and Wabash.

When backup officer Michael Glass arrived on scene, authorities say Black fled dragging Ofc. Glass with him.  At some point, Ofc. Glass was able to retrieve his weapon and fired one shot into the vehicle.

Authorities say Black crashed into 3 vehicles in the parking lot of the CVS Pharmacy, located at 2041 George Jenkins Boulevard and came to a final stop against a light pole resulting in Ofc. Glass being thrown.

Ofc. Glass was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center but did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

Black was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center as a precaution.  Authorities say Black was not shot during the incident.

Ofc. Glass has been with the Lakeland Police Department since July 2008.  Per department policy, Ofc. Glass will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
