SWVA doctors get new fungal meningitis concern letter

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

A WSLS 10 Health Team update to the fungal meningitis outbreak.

WSLS has learned that the Virginia Department of Health sent out a new letter regarding the outbreak, to doctors in Southwest Virginia earlier this month.  The letter advises doctors of ongoing concerns the CDC found.

The letter asks doctors to consider reevaluating patients for signs or symptoms of fungal meningitis, after the CDC found some people who received the tainted steroid pain relief injections, but had not previously been identified with the disease, had unrecognized infections.

Further, the letter also recommends that doctors consider ordering an MRI with contrast for patients who have "persistent, but baseline symptoms" because signs of the fungal infection may be difficult to distinguish from chronic pain.

In Virginia, the tainted injections were sent to the New River Valley Surgical Center in Christiansburg, and Insight Imaging in Roanoke, from the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

The outbreak killed two people from our area, and caused 53 total cases fungal infections in the Commonwealth.
