Hundreds expected for free Easter dinner, giveaways in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

As many as 2,000 people are expected to come to the Durham Rescue Mission Friday for an Easter dinner and giveaways.

The event includes 1,000 pounds of barbecue, hot dogs, more than 1,000 Easter baskets for kids and 9,000 clothes for adults and children.

"When I was a child, I didn't have the opportunity to have a basket or enjoy Easter like this, so to be able to see it in a child's face today, it's like re-living it," said Gregory Johnson, who is in a program at the Durham Rescue Mission and helped put together some of the baskets.

More than 400 volunteers come together to make the annual event happen. It's been happening for more than 30 years. The past several years have seen an increase in the number of people who turn out due to the economy, according to the Rev. Ernie Mills, co-founder of the Durham Rescue Mission.

The Northeast Central Durham community is one of the poorest areas in our community. These kids would not have an Easter if it wasn't for the Durham Rescue Mission, he said.

"If your kids are not at risk, we want you to invite some others that you might know in your neighborhood to come and enjoy this because this is for the kids," Mills said.

The event starts at noon and lasts until about 3 p.m. It is being held at the Durham Rescue Mission at 1201 East Main Street in Durham.
