Appalachian Power asks for rate increase

Posted: Updated:

Appalachian Power has filed a request to raise rates to cover increased costs. If approved, the changes would result in customers paying about 1.5% more than the current rate.

Appalachian made 2 filings with the State Corporation Commission (SCC) to update Rate Adjustment Clauses.  Appalachian says that existing rate adjustments are set to expire, and that most of their request would simply renew the existing adjustments. Overall, the company is seeking an increase of about 4% in their filings.

Appalachian Power's president and CEO Charles Patton said "beginning in April, customers will see a decrease in rates for several months before they return to near current levels in early 2014."

Current rates are 11.22 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for a customer using 1,000 kWh per month. Appalachian says that rates will fall to 10.98 cents per kWh in April. Their request would  then increase rates to 11.39 cents per kWh early next year.
