Fast Track Health Care offers 6 different certifications. Shannon Fairbanks chose to focus on phlebotomy. A phlebotomist is a person who draws blood. The work he had been doing wasn't stable enough.
Fairbanks says, "Mostly in the construction field, landscaping, things of that nature employment was always kind of up and down. I was looking for something a little more solid."
Through a work force development grant he was able to study at Fast Track.
Program Director Teresa Jones explains, "Health care is recession proof. People will get sick regardless of the economy."
The programs at Fast Track last anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months.
After four weeks of classes, Shannon came to Solstas Lab Partners for his clinical work.
He explains, "About half way through my clinical experience a position opened up and I thought it would be a good idea to submit a resume."
His hard work is what made a difference.
Jones says, "Not everyone wants to go to college. Not everyone is financially able to go to college."
Because the classes are 8 hours a day 4-5 days a week, the training he needed came quickly to help him find the stability he had been looking for.
Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. for the Blue Ridge Music Festival.
