In retirement, Wayne Stallings won't quit

LOUISBURG, N.C. -

Sixty-six-year-old Wayne Stallings is keeping busy this Monday morning. The retired accountant is preparing tax returns for senior citizens in Louisburg -- and doing the work free of charge.

"And the alternative is, and I'm not knocking any tax preparers, but it's expensive and the laws are complicated," Stallings said. "So for seniors to be able to come to a group that will do it for free and do it accurately for them, I think that's a really neat thing."

Stallings also spent 35 years serving in the National Guard. For him, getting up early to help out others is routine. In his retirement, he estimates he spends more than 30 hours a week on different volunteer projects including free tax preparation, working as the service armed forces chair for the local Red Cross and working on the United Way board for Franklin County.

He also regularly donates blood and performs service projects in the area.  He and a team of people help build wheelchair ramps for people who need them.

"I'm actually busier now than I was before I was retired," Stallings said, "but it's volunteer work and it's stuff I really like to do and it's a lot of fun."

It's work people around him appreciate.

"Anything we ask him to do he's right there for it, and the good part about it: he's smiling all the way," Louisburg Senior Center Interim Director Mattie Woodard said. "He never says no."

He never says no because, he says, the folks around him don't quit either.

"I get to meet all kinds of neat people and help people out," Stallings said, "and that's really what it's all about."
