Ware injury is uncommon on court but common for trauma surgeons

Posted: Updated:

As crews prepared to take Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware off the court, teammates and anyone watching couldn't believe what had just happened.

Doctor Trevor Owen specializes in orthopaedic trauma injuries at Carilion Clinic.

He says, "With a guy his size jumping as far and as high as he did, it is certainly possible that it was just the impact and the twist itself that caused it to happen."

At 6'2" and 175 pounds Ware jumped up and appeared to land with a twisting motion which is likely what caused the bones to break. A compound fracture of the leg is not common on the basketball court, but is common in normal life.

Dr. Owen explains, "Typically we will see that from a car accident or motorcycle accident.   A rod would be inserted into the knee and down the bone to stabilize it and hold it in place."

Dr. Owen says an injury like the one Ware suffered usually takes four to six months to heal. Ware could possibly be ready to play next season.
