Rays hope to boost attendance this year with food and surprises

Posted: Updated:
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Tampa Bay Rays fans will be able to enjoy a sip of wine and sliced turkey this season along with their peanuts and crackerjacks.

If you're really hungry there's a two pound burger available at the Brew House garnished with a half pound of bacon with a one pound side of fries. Any fan that finishes that meal will earn two tickets to a future game and a tee shirt, extra large no doubt.

The Team is trotting out a whole new menu of new foods including some vegan options to satisfy the hunger of health-minded fans. The vegan option is for suites only.

Fans may also notice more than 300 large flat screen TV's mounted around the stadium. Some of the installers spent a few moments Monday enjoying their handiwork while watching college baseball broadcast into the monitors. Strictly for testing purposes, no doubt.

And there's a new amenity in the right field stands that Rays manager Joe Maddon thought would make a good addition to the fan experience, a Chinese gong to mark special moments and go along with the Rays new theme song when team members run onto the field.

Hint: It was a popular tune by the rock group T Rex back in the 70's.

Late Monday the team announced a sell out crowd against the opening day opponents, the Baltimore Orioles.

Even though the team finished last in MLB attendance last season, they're hoping for a better turnout this time around. This is the eighth season in a row the Rays have packed the Trop for their opening game.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation into whether a Spring Hill home seller committed fraud by lying about a sinkhole under the home. This follows an 8 On Your Side investigation that showed that Glenn Jasen, the former homeowner, cashed a check from Citizens Property Insurance for $153,745 in January 2009.
