Virginia Tech students create 'DrinkUp' app

Posted: Updated:

Two Virginia Tech students are working on becoming successful entrepreneurs.

K Alnajar and Drew Stegmaier are working on what they hope is the next big idea.

"It's one of the hardest thing about being a student entrepreneur because you have to balance your work, you want a social life still, and you want this project to do really well. So, it's a challenge, but we're doing as much as I can." DrinkUp app co-founder, K Alnajar says.

The two Virginia Tech students are working together to fix a problem many college students and adults face when they try to get a drink at a packed bar. They hope to do with an app they've created called 'DrinkUp.'

"When you walk into a crowded bar, it's tough to get a bartenders attention," DrinkUp app co-founder, Drew Stegmaier says. "That's the problem we solve by providing a smart phone app for users and an app for bartenders on a device such as an pad."

The allows you to select the number of drinks you want, the type of drink, and then pay for it, all without having to struggle to order from the bartender.

"You get a notification saying your drink is ready. You walk up and flash your verification code and the bartender also has an image of your face, so they can identify you," Stegmaier says.

The idea is to cut down on the time it takes for you to get a drink.

"It's been really cool exploring this whole new field and making it happen and watching it grow and hopefully it'll be come something people use," Alnajar says.

The bartender also has a separate app interface with customer insights. They can see the average wait time, the male to female ratio, and they can even connect further with customers by automatically knowing their favorite drink orders.

The students plan to submit 'DrinkUp' to the App Store by the middle of April. Now, the next time you're in the bar, you may have K And Drew to thank for speeding up the process.
