Red Cross helps Interstate 77 crash victims

CARROLL COUNTY -

The American Red Cross and more than 100 volunteers helped put up crash victims in local hotels in Carroll County.

At least one family from Michigan stayed at the Red Carpet Inn just off Exit 14 on Interstate 77.

Twenty-eight people, according to officials, were taken by school buses to a shelter at the Hillsville VFW, before either renting cars to continue traveling, or being placed in hotels.

A handful of local Subway restaurants opened up on the holiday and made sandwiches for uninjured victims.

"We had a lot of people in the community that were either ex-first responders or served in the military or civic organizations, so you know when they hear bad news go out, they all want to try and muster and do something to benefit the victims, also the responders in the community," said Grady DeVilbiss, of the Red Cross, Woods River Chapter.

A faith-based organization in Carroll County got involved and paid to put people up overnight.
