Gun range fire empties building

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Ladies night at the Florida Firearms Academy gun range on Hillsborough Avenue promises free range admission for women. But the Monday night special got cut short when a fire broke out. Customers hustled out when thick black smoke started billowing from the ceiling.

"We were on the pistol range and then within a matter of 60 seconds there was a lot of dense smoke coming in through the different ventilation shafts" said Gary Miller, who was shooting with his wife.

Hillsborough firefighters could not attack the fire because of that black smoke, and had to wait for a special ventilation unit to arrive to clear the way. But the smoke wasn't all the hazards they faced.

"Absolutely dangerous because we do have a lot of ammunition, a lot of weapons in there. We have not heard any ammo going off, any bullets going off, but at this time it is a dangerous situation just because it is a gun range" said Ronnie Rivera of Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters used water to put some of the fire out, the rest burned itself out. Investigators are concentrating their efforts on the attack area, where they believe the fire may have started.
