What does it take to be a Roanoke City Police officer? - WSLS 10 NBC in Roanoke/Lynchburg Va

What does it take to be a Roanoke City Police officer?

You have to be fit to serve in Roanoke City and the Lawfit Assessment says a lot about where recruits are in the process of becoming an officer.

Class 66 of the Roanoke City Police Academy is a very determined family.  The group started the academy in October of 2012 and allowed me to check on their progress and be a part of the process Tuesday.

The Lawfit Assessment is a way of determining based on different scoring criteria the fitness and ability of recruits to perform adequately as an officer in the field.

Dr. David Bever created Lawfit and works with the National Center for Public Safety Fitness.  He visited Roanoke to get a feel for the training local recruits go through.

Dr. Bever explains, "We have done enough work to show there are three tests, the bench press, pull up test and the 1.5 mile run.  If my people can do well in those, they can do well in suspect pursuit and apprehension."

Loren Ford is a Roanoke City Investigator and Lawfit Instructor. He says, "We are very fortunate that at our police department the whole department, the command staff and everybody is very conscious of the physical fitness level of the officers."

Roanoke City Police Recruit, Chadwick Desseyn served in the marines and is looking forward to serving the Roanoke community as an officer with his fellow recruits.

He says, "It is a 24/7 job. There is a lot to learn, so we have to stick together. I'll do anything for these guys. They are my brothers and sisters."

Melissa Register is a recruit who came to Roanoke from Northern Virginia.  She likes the continued focus on fitness Roanoke City provides.

She explains, "Once we leave here we have to sustain it.   We can't just now we are out of the academy we can do whatever we want we have to keep it up."

Class 66 will graduate in May. Watch WSLS 10 Wednesday for Lawfit part 2, the obstacle course.
