What's News Today, Wednesday, April 3, 2013

President Barack Obama will continue his push for federal gun control legislation today when he speaks at the Denver Police Academy, not far from the Aurora theater that was the site of a mass shooting last July. Obama will meet with law enforcement and community leaders to discuss ongoing efforts to produce legislation aimed at curbing gun violence through expanding background checks and limiting gun magazine capacity at the federal level.

Meanwhile, Connecticut lawmakers will vote on a gun control bill that sponsors say will be one of the toughest in the country. It would establish the nation's first statewide weapon offender registry and expand existing state laws on assault weapons. It also requires universal background checks for sales of all firearms and ammunition. The general assembly is expected to pass it.

Today marks the final General Assembly session for Bedford County Delegate Lacey Putney who announced his retirement last week. Putney has served in the House of Delegates for 52 years.

Senator Tim Kaine will be at American Legion Post 16 in Lynchburg at 11:30 this morning discussing his first bill in Congress with veterans and business leaders. Kaine says the Troop Talent Act will streamline and increase military credentialing.

Ringling Brothers is bringing the circus to Roanoke a little early this year. Today through Friday, The Greatest Show on Earth will offer free educational programs in Roanoke schools, libraries, and daycares. They'll also hold a few private performances for less fortunate children.

Today marks the beginning of peak cherry blossom season. 70 percent or more of the blossoms on the Japanese Yoshino cherry trees are open now through April 6.
