Roanoke City Police detective is a three time Lawfit Champion

ROANOKE -

When you meet Detective Jennifer Owens you feel like you have found an instant friend.  She is a Radford University graduate who has been a member of Roanoke City's Police Department for the last five years.

In her five years she has made an impression on her fellow officers and people she comes in contact with in the community.

She spends a lot of time in the gym and is an instructor for the police academy.

She explains, "Our physical fitness at the academy, everything we do is based on improving our Lawfit score."

Owens makes pull-ups look easy, but this success comes with hard work that's expected of all members of the department.

Roanoke City Police Chief Chris Perkins says, "She sets the standard for the prototypical police officer. She is in shape.  She is intelligent."

She is a three time National Lawfit Champion.  The challenge for local officers starts in Roanoke.

She says, "It is a friendly competition within the police department. Whoever scores really well usually gets invited to attend the National Lawfit Competition."

Chief Perkins says,"She shows she has what it takes and she wins.  That motivates people here."

She says, "In law enforcement you have to stay physically fit.  It can be the difference in life or death.  It is definitely very important."

Chief Perkins says it is a physical focus that ultimately makes a difference in the ability to serve the community in a positive way.
