Moonshine, marijuana found during ABC search in Franklin, Floyd Counties

FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA -

Illegal moonshine, gun, and marijuana charges are pending in Franklin and Floyd Counties, following a two day multi-state agency search last week.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) revealed on Thursday, April 4th, that the special enforcement effort took place on March 28th and 29th.

The operation used a Virginia National Guard aircraft with ABC special agents as spotters, along with ABC agents and Floyd County deputies on the ground to search 26 sites in the area for signs of illegal moonshine production.

During the operation, ABC agents say they found:

  • An active 100 gallon black pot still
  • 150 gallons of mash
  • 22 gallons of untaxed liquor (aka moonshine)
  • Various amounts of liquor making supplies
  • Multiple guns

"The focus of this cooperative effort was to locate and incapacitate existing stills," said ABC Special Agent in Charge Kyle Blanks.  "The operation was successful and one we'll more than likely repeat."

The task force also found an indoor marijuana growing operation, and seized a "large quantity" or marijuana, along with items used to grow the plant.

The ABC is working with the Commonwealth's Attorneys in Franklin and Floyd Counties on pending charges.
