NASCAR gets first "wet run" of new track drying system at Martinsville

Posted: Updated:
MARTINSVILLE, VA -

Thursday's wet weather made for a wet Martinsville Speedway Friday morning -- but it gave crews the chance to debut a brand new, state of the art track drying system.

It's called Air Titan and it was first developed by NASCAR's R&D Center.

It uses compressed air to shoot water off the racing surface and onto the apron, where a vacuum truck is able to suck it up.  A jet dryer then comes through and dries any remaining moisture.

This was the first time NASCAR had the chance to test it out on a speedway that had actually been rained on.

It's designed to dry the track more quickly and significantly cut back on rain delays during races.

"It's a pretty neat process," said Clay Campbell, President of the Martinsville Speedway.  "It should reduce 80 percent of the time we use to make it dry, so we can get back to racing in quick order if we have to.  Today we're getting a good tryout."

Campbell says the system can dry their entire track in about 20 to 30 minutes.
