RADFORD, VA -

The suspect in the armed robbery of the Radford CVS on Halloween night 2011, entered a plea deal on Friday.

Radford Commonwealth's Attorney Chris Rehak says Derek Adam Stevenson pleaded guilty to nine charges, and the judge agreed to suspend all but 15 years of a 53 year prison sentence.  Stevenson must also pay $4500 in fines, and serve ten years of probation after being released from prison.

Police say Stevenson walked into the CVS on Main Street October 31, 2011, around 9:50 p.m., while wearing a mask and armed with a shotgun.  Surveillance video shows Stevenson go to the pharmacy an demand prescription drugs.  However, Stevenson was not able to the the drugs or money.  Police later determined the shotgun was not loaded.

Officers arrested Stevenson within hours of the incident, and he had been held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail ever since.

"This attempted robbery of a business on Halloween night was extremely dangerous and required a fast, strategic and well coordinated response by the Radford City Police Department," Rehak wrote in an e-mail.  "Helpful eyewitnesses enabled law enforcement to quickly disseminate a suspect description and establish a perimeter around the area.  Many criminals get away with masked robberies and are never identified, arrested or prosecuted.  Stevenson was quickly caught, incarcerated and appropriately punished with a long prison term.  While nobody was seriously injured, this case again illustrates how drug addiction can lead to violence and constitutes a public safety threat to all citizens."
