SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -
A suspect airlifted from Southern Pines to Chapel Hill for gunshot wounds escaped police custody after law enforcement learned the man has multiple warrants for his arrest, according to Southern Pines police.

Larry Alexander Leverett was shot four times during a drive by shooting on Richards Street in Southern Pines Friday around 1:30 p.m., according to police.

Leverett was airlifted to Chapel Hill for treatment. Another victim in the shooting was transported to Moore County Regional Hospital by a private vehicle.

Authorities learned of outstanding warrants for Leverett and placed him in the custody of the University of North Carolina Police Department while being treated for his injuries.

Leverett was never under arrest while at the hospital, according to Tom Smith, Director of UNC Hospital Police. Smith said that UNC Hospital police were working with other law enforcement agencies to arrest Leverett before he left. Leverett left the hospital without being formally discharged and against medical advise, according to Smith.

Leverett left the hospital Saturday before 11:30 a.m.

Leverett is a 21-year-old black male with dreadlocks, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 300 pounds. He has three gunshot wounds to the torso and one to the left bicep.

Police say Leverett may have left Chapel Hill in a red Jeep Grand Cherokee which was recovered at Brookside Park Apartments in Southern Pines.

Leverett is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with knowledge of the whereabouts of Leverett is asked to call 911 immediately.

Southern Pines police say that have no suspects in custody related to the drive by shooting.

A fire broke out at the same address on Richards Street as the drive by shooting Friday night around 10 p.m., according to Chief Mike Cameron with Southern Pines Fire and Rescue.

Cameron said the apartment suffered significant damage and is uninhabitable.

Authorities believe arson is the source of the fire but do not have any suspects in custody at this time.
