Botetourt County crash kills 2

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a three vehicle crash Saturday night. 

It happened around 6:10 pm on Route 11 one mile south of Route 640 in Botetourt County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound in a highway work zone when it collided with a 2003 Ford SUV which was traveling northbound.

The motorcycle driver David Jackson Via Jr, 43, of Copper Hill, Virginia was killed along with his passenger Tammy Lynda Tyree, 47, of Salem. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash but died at the scene.

The driver the Ford SUV Chatman Huffman Jr., 38, of Fincastle was not injured in the crash.

Police say a three wheel Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Alvin Lawson, of Elliston was traveling southbound when it attempted to avoid the crash, hit the Harley, and then veered of the left side of the roadway hitting a jersey wall. A female passenger on the three wheel motorcycle Pamela Jonas, of Elliston, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team is assisting in the investigation to help determine the cause of the crash.
