MARTINSVILLE -

Frank Beamer is no stranger to the race track, but Sunday was a first for the Hokies football coach.

Beamer drove the pace car to start the Sprint Cup race in Martinsville.

Beamer said he's a race fan and always wanted to feel what it would be like behind the wheel on the track.

"This is the first time I've actually driven the pace car," he said. "I started races, been in the pace car, done different things, been the grand marshal but this is different. I was out there practicing a little bit and there's a little more to it than you'd think there is."

Beamer said it was a unique opportunity since he wouldn't have been able to get away from the team in the fall, which is when the Sprint Cup returns to Martinsville.

The Hokies spring football game is set for April 20.
