What's News Today, April, 8, 2013

President Barack Obama will head to Hartford, Connecticut today to push for new, stricter gun control legislation. He'll visit the University of Hartford where he's expected to call on the American people to join him in pressuring congress to approve measures in reducing gun violence.

This may be a pivotal week for Congress as the Senate gets back to work today after a two week holiday. They'll look for ways to reach an agreement on the president's proposals for new gun legislation and focus on immigration reform.

Legendary film critic Roger Ebert, who lost his battle with cancer last week, will be laid to rest today. The public memorial will take place in Chicago at 10 a.m..

Danville City Council and the school board will have a joint meeting tonight. A few topics on the agenda include the next fiscal year budget and a briefing on school closures. The meeting is at six at Galileo High School.

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors will meet tonight where there will be a public hearing on a proposal to add school resource officers at every county school in an attempt to improve security. They'll also discuss a possible increase in real estate tax. The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at the Education and Cultural Center.

The Salem High School boys and girls basketball teams will be honored at a reception tonight for their state championship victories. Resolutions commending both teams will be adopted during the Salem City Council meeting tonight at 7:30.
