Martinsville officials study reverting to town

Posted: Updated:

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Martinsville officials are revisiting a proposal to switch the city to a town system of government and make it part of Henry County.

City officials have studied the concept several times in the past. But they hit stumbling blocks and shelved it.

Tight finances have revived the proposal.

City Attorney Eric Monday tells The Martinsville Bulletin (http://bit.ly/10Kv45N ) that new studies are being conducted to help officials decide whether the city should revert to a town.

Last year, a three-judge panel approved Bedford's plan to switch to a town system of government. Bedford's reversion will go into effect July 1.

South Boston and Clifton Forge are the only other cities in Virginia that have reverted to town status.
