Advocates to press lawmakers on women's issues

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Women's advocates are planning to release a legislative agenda and a critique of what's happening now in the North Carolina General Assembly.

State lawmakers will hold a news conference at the Legislature on Tuesday to evaluate several core areas and discuss policy fixes that they say prioritize the needs of women and their families.

The group spearheading the effort, North Carolina Women United, expects to bring 85 to 100 supporters from across the state to the legislature.

The group is especially critical of lawmakers' opposition to expanding Medicaid under President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform law.

In addition to improving access to health care, the group will focus on improving civic participation, promoting economic self-sufficiency, advancing equality and protecting women from violence through public policy.
