Successful cliff rescue in Botetourt

BOTETOURT COUNTY -

5:45 update: Botetourt County Emergency Services said the victim is currently in stable condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  A spokesman for BCES declined to release the man's identity. 

The man was going down the side of the mountain to retrieve scrap metal from an old refrigerator, rescuers said.

He wanted to sell the scrap metal for profit.

12:53 update: the man has been successfully pulled up and is now on his way to Roanoke Memorial.

Earlier:

Botetourt County volunteer rescuers and paid staff are on scene right now near Eagle Rock after a man fell 30 feet from a cliff around 10:30 this morning.

The man, from Botetourt County was on a walk with his uncle, authorities said.

The rescue is taking place off Prices Bluff Road.

The man is said to have several broken bones but otherwise okay.

One of Carilion's Lifeguard helicopters will fly him to Roanoke Memorial for treatment.

WSLS 10's Scott Leamon is on scene and will have more starting at 5 pm.
