NEW BERN, N.C. -

A Vanceboro woman employed as a tax clerk with the City of New Bern has been charged with embezzlement.

28-year-old Susan Rae Sutton is charged with two felony counts of Embezzlement by a Public Officer or Trustee. One charge is for March through November, 2011; the other for January through May, 2012.

Sutton turned herself in April 9 and was released on her written promise to appear. She made a first appearance Wednesday in Craven County District Court.

Embezzlement by a Public Officer or Trustee is a Class F felony. It carries a maximum punishment of 16-20 months imprisonment per count.

District Attorney Scott Thomas said, "The City of New Bern contacted my office in mid-2012 to report suspected embezzlement at the tax office. I contacted the State Bureau of Investigation to have them conduct the investigation. They have completed their investigation and developed probable cause to charge Ms. Sutton with two felony counts of embezzlement by a public officer or trustee. The warrants alleged that she embezzled $ 5,766.22 in 2011, and $ 3,270.05 in 2012."

Sutton is due back in court on June 5.
