ROANOKE -

Edgar Ornelas is known as "The Salsa Guy" around Roanoke because of his dance moves. He will be my dance instructor as I get ready for the Dancing with the Valley Stars event this fall that raises money for the Turning Point Domestic Shelter through the Salvation Army.

As we practice at the Kirk YMCA, Suzanne Gandy is busy at the Salvation Army getting details worked out for this year's event. Last year, the program raised about thirty thousand dollars.

She says, "We would love to raise fifty thousand this year. We hope to do that with more corporate sponsorships. We feel like we will sell out pretty quickly."

This is the third year for the event but the first for me. I will eventually get my own red kettle and hope that my friends and the community will vote through donations to help Edgar and I win the competition.

Gandy explains, "The dancers raise money. They all get a kettle their own kettles throughout the season leading up to the event. People vote through their contributions for the dancers."

This year's event is November 9th at 7:00pm at the Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.

If you would like to pledge money for Edgar Ornelas and Karen McNew just call The Salvation Army with your donation - 540-343-5335.
