FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Some of North Carolina's homegrown talent is now competing on NBC's hit show "The Voice."

Fayetteville native Luke Edgemon appeared on the show Tuesday night performing Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me."

Edgemon is a graduate of Fayetteville's Massey Hill Classical High School. Caroline Sanchez, his senior-year Advanced Placement English Literature teacher, said Edgemon was in the Key Club and in chorus.

She said he often was a soloist in the chorus, and it was evident he was very talented. Sanchez said it was clear Edgemon "would do music for the rest of his life."

Edgemon's neighbor, Darrin Ashley, also recalled the young man's passion for singing. Ashley said Edgemon was always humming, even singing once at a cook-out.

"He was very ambitious. He just wanted to sing. He loved singing. That's all he ever wanted to do," Ashley said. "It's awesome to have somebody out of the neighborhood. He always wanted to be a singer, and it's awesome to be their neighbors."

Erika Vilaro made sure to record Edgemon's debut on the "The Voice" Tuesday night. Vilaro once worked with Edgemon's brother. She said now she's hooked on the show, just like she got hooked on Edgemon's music once another coworker shared it with her.

"I think he's going to do really, really well. I know his family's really proud. I know his brother is stoked. He was really excited for him," Vilaro said.

"To know that you've got somebody here in this area that's going out and fulfilling their dreams just gives everybody here that still wants to follow their dreams hope to do something like that."

"The Voice" airs on NBC Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. On the show, well-known recording artists pick contestants to be on their teams based on blind auditions.

Tuesday night, artist Shakira wanted Edgemon on her team, but artist Usher also made a plea for Edgemon. Edgemon chose Shakira, and he will now receive coaching from her as he continues to compete in future episodes of the show.
