No danger from heavy gas odor in Apex

Posted: Updated:
APEX, N.C. -
The Town of Apex said there is no danger connected to the widespread gas odor in southwest Wake County.

The Apex Fire Department received calls about a heavy gas odor in the area of Evans Road, said Stacie Galloway, Public Information Officer for the Town of Apex.

Galloway said a few men were cutting into old, high pressure propane tanks for scrap metal. A small fire broke out at one tank but was quickly extinguished.

The odor is that of sulphur dioxide, an additive in propane to give it a unique odor.

The Town of Apex spoke with the Department of Public Health and the Department of Agriculture about the smell. Both of those state departments regulate the sell of propane.

The concentration of sulphur dioxide in the air isn't close to a threatening level, Galloway said.
