Virginia State Police are investigating what caused a deadly crash in Franklin County on Wednesday morning.
According to Sgt. Robert Carpentieri, of State Police's Salem division, the investigating trooper found a pick-up truck had run off of Route 40, west of Rocky Mount around 6:38 a.m.
The investigation revealed that 65-year-old Lonnie Madison Crewe, of Ferrum, had been driving a 1992 white GMC straight truck east on Route 40, when the truck ran off the road near Route 40's intersection with Route 1027. The truck hit a tree, then a utility pole, and flipped.
The trooper said the impact threw Crewe from the truck, and that Crewe was not wearing a seatbelt. Crewe died at the scene of the crash.
