Roanoke workforce now is more educated

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

A new study shows the Roanoke Valley is above the national average when it comes to workforce education.

According to the Milken Institute, the average Roanoke Valley worker has nearly 13.78 years of education.

That's slightly above the national average which is 13.68.

According to the Roanoke Regional Partnership the numbers represent tremendous progress since the valley was below the national average in 2000.

The study is expected to help the partnership attract new businesses by emphasizing Roanoke's improving workforce.

"You compete better if you have those who have some training in college and so forth as opposed to when you just have a high percentage of high school graduates," said Wayne Strickland, the Executive Director of the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission, an economic organization.

Both Lynchburg and Danville are still below the national average for workforce education at 13.48 and 13.18 years of education respectively.
