Clone of Henderson Lawn Sycamore returns to its roots

Posted: Updated:

A clone of a former landmark in Blacksburg is about to return to its roots.

People throughout town remember the old sycamore tree that towered over Henderson Lawn at the edge of town and the Virginia Tech campus. It was more than 100 years old when it became infected and had to be brought down in 2010.

Before it came down, two Virginia Tech forest biologists took hundreds of cuttings hoping one would take root. It did. In fact, they ended up any two clones to give back. "This is just making so many people happy and it was a relatively simple thing took a little effort but not much," said Virginia Tech Forest Biologist John Seiler. We have greenhouses here and the experts here so with a little bit of effort we did and it's making a whole lot of people happy to think that they actually have their tree back and in a relatively short time it will be large again."

One of the "twins" was planted on campus last year. The second now 10-foot-tree will be planted near the old sycamore on Henderson Lawn on Earth Day, April 22. There will be a ceremony, presided over by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger and Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam at 11:30 a.m..
