Salem Red Sox looking forward to home opener, strong season

Posted: Updated:

It's that time of the year when baseball lovers get to root, root, root for the home team.  Friday night is the home opener for the Salem Red Sox.

Storm Team 10 says the rain should clear out by the afternoon and the weather should be great for the first pitch at 7:05pm.

The Salem Sox have already played six games this season, all on the road.  Although their record currently stands at 2-4, they're riding some momentum heading into Friday night -- they won their last game 7-2 over Potomac, and won the series with the Nationals 2-1.

The team is without a couple of key starters from last season, who made the jump to the majors  -- most notably, Jackie Bradley Jr, who now plays in Boston.  Still, the Salem Sox front office says it's excited about this year's roster.

They say this year's team has a lot of young players, but talented young players at that -- some who could very well make their way up the ranks by the end of the season.

Two of the Boston Red Sox first round draft picks, Shortstop Deven Marrero and Catcher Blake Swihart, will take the field Friday night.  The team is also high on Friday night's starting pitcher Henry Owens, a 6'6" lefty, who some have compared to Randy Johnson.

"The Salem Red Sox haven't been to the playoffs since 2009 and from talking to the guys, they want to change that in 2013," said Evan Lepler, Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Salem Red Sox.  "And they certainly have the talent to do it."

The Salem Sox host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for a three game series Friday - Sunday.  Tickets are available online and at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

The first 500 fans to walk through the gates Friday will get a free poster.  There will also be fireworks following the game.
