Posted: Updated:

The Alligator River Bridge that's a major connection between the Outer Banks and mainland North Carolina reopen to traffic Sunday night after being closed for 12 days.

A key part used to keep the bridge closed and support the weight of the vehicles broke during repairs. Replacement parts were secured on Sunday and crews opened the bridge Sunday at 11:45 p.m.

North Carolina Department of Transportation removed signs on U.S. 64 when bridge opened but crews will remove detour signs beginning Monday morning.

The bridge is located in Tyrrell and Dare counties.
