Family of Neil MacInnis speaks to WSLS

ROANOKE, VA -

The uncle of Neil MacInnis, the 18-year old police say shot two women inside New River Community College Friday afternoon, spoke to WSLS over the phone Sunday afternoon.

Colonel Stewart MacInnis said his nephew hadn't been in trouble in the past and the family wasn't sure of a possible motive.

"Our family is really devastated and stunned by the events that have happened. Our hearts go out to the families, to the victims and the families and all the students and faculty and staff who were there. They've all been impacted by it. We're concerned about them" said Stewart MacInnis, the family spokesman.

He said the students and staff at New River Community College did a great job reacting to the events and deserve to be commended.

"Our lives have started fresh here. We're in unchartered territory. We're just taking this a day at a time. We know generally what to expect but it's going to be a tough time ahead for us and for Neil. He's a part of the family and we love him. We're standing by him but we're here to see the whole process through" said Stewart MacInnis.

New River Community College classes at all locations will be canceled on Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16.  Offices will remain open.

Counseling services will available Sunday, April 14, at NRCC in Dublin from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and at both Dublin and the college's New River Valley Mall site on Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
