Update: Rockbridge Co. fire only 5% contained

Posted: Updated:

8:30 p.m. Sunday

From Morgan Donnelly, reporter in the field

Fire Chief Butch Lawhorn says 150 acres of land are on fire in Buena Vista and Rockbridge County.

The U.S. Forest Service has been called in along with multiple fire crews, bulldozers and helicopters dumping water on the fire.

The chief says the fire is close to homes but he's "confident" no home will be damaged because more than 25 fire units are stationed on the ridge line watching closely near the homes.

Crews are currently working to contain the north and south ends of the fire.

They expect it to burn for the next two to three days. Heavy smoke can be seen for miles. They are asking people to stay inside and away from the fire. Right now, there are no evacuations planned.

Right now, they are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Chief Lawhorn says the fire started around 4:15 p.m. near Pine Avenue and spread quickly in the first 45 minutes. He's hoping with rain headed our way, it will help put out the fire.

UPDATE (7:20pm):

Morgan Donnelly reports no homes are currently in danger from Buena Vista 100+ acre fire. Bulldozers and helicopters are on scene trying to contain the fire.

A Buena Vista fire is burning right now.

We're being told the Elephant Mountain Fire started on Pine Ave. and is moving towards the Blue Ridge Parkway.

More than 100 acres are on fire.
