Last minute scramble to file taxes

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

If you're like a lot of Virginians, you're waking up this morning and still need to file your taxes before tonight's deadline.

There's a quick and easy solution. You can get an automatic six month extension by going to Free File on irs.gov. Anyone can use this free service, regardless of income, to request an automatic extension on form 4868. Local CPAs remind you it's just an extension to file and not an extension to pay.

"If you don't owe the government any money you can file an extension form," explained Michael Morris, Certified Public Accountant. "There's no penalty for filing it late and as long as you don't owe any money there's no interest or anything. You have until October if you want to wait take that much time."

If you owe, you'll need to estimate the amount you think you owe and pay that by tonight. You'll have until October 15th to file your return but don't wait until the last minute then to get it done.
