WSLS 10 announces departure of Jay Warren

Posted: Updated:

WSLS 10 is announcing the departure of primary anchor and Senior Political Reporter, Jay Warren, who is leaving to pursue other career opportunities. His last day will be Friday, April 19th.

Jay began his career at WSLS back in 1998 as the "10 Listens" reporter and quickly worked his way to the anchor desk as the weekend anchor, and has been anchoring ever since!! Jay was promoted to WSLS's primary anchor in 2008, anchoring the 5p, 530p, 6pm, and 11pm newscasts, as well as the 10pm newscast with our partner Fox 21/27.

Jay's passion for politics boosted him to become the market leader in political reporting. He has covered all of the major political stories not only here in Southwest Virginia, but also on the national scene. Jay covered the impeachment of then, President Bill Clinton, both inaugurations of President George W. Bush, the 9-11 terror attacks live from the Pentagon, as well as the first 48 hours of the April 16th tragedy at Virginia Tech.

Jay has covered every congressional, presidential, and statewide election for WSLS, since 1998. In each political season, he participated in statewide debates for just about every big race, and impressively moderated and produced national televised debates for the 2008 Senate race between Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore, as well as the 2009 gubernatorial race between Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell.

Jay received the Walter Cronkite award for Individual Achievement in 2002 for his political coverage of that same year's congressional race. Jay is also the Board Chair for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia and has been volunteering with them since 2010.

Of the many things Jay has achieved throughout his career at WSLS, the one that cannot be overstated is the respect and admiration from his colleagues here at WSLS… He has been a great mentor to reporters, and a great leader to those who have been in the television industry for many years.

We will miss Jay and we wish him well!!
