Virginia State Police are investigating what caused a tractor trailer hauling strawberries to crash in the opposite direction of travel on Interstate 81 on Monday.

According to State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the crash took place around 12:12 p.m., near Fort Chiswell in Wythe County.

The investigating trooper determined that a tractor trailer hauling 50,000 pounds of strawberries, driven by 40-year-old Jamie S. Richardson, of Trap Hill, North Carolina, was driving north on I-81.  The truck turned, crossed the median, went into the southbound lanes of I-81, flipped, and landed on top of a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, driven by William Persinger, of Covington.

EMTs took both Richardson and Persinger to Wythe County Community Hospital for treatment.

State Police say Richardson was not wearing a seatbelt, and charged him with:

  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of a controlled substance Schedule I or II
  • Possession of synthetic drugs
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Reckless driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The crash shut down all three I-81 southbound lanes for several hours.
