Former Martinsville Police Officer charged in shooting

MARTINSVILLE, VA -

Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting in Martinsville, involving a former city police officer.

According to investigators, the shooting took place on Sunday, April 14th at the Avalon Arms Apartment Complex in Martinsville.

Special Agents with the VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation are looking into the case.

State Police charged James Scott Witherow with malicious wounding.  He's being held at the Martinsville City Jail, on a $5,000 secured bond.

The person who was shot, Marleen S. Carter, was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Pittsylvania County Commonwealth's Attorney David Grimes has been asked to serve as special prosecutor.
