The US Forest Service says the fire size shrank to 250 acres, and is 33% contained as of Monday evening.

About 140 firefighters, including two hotshot crews, and a helicopter are working on the fire.

Fire crews used a bulldozer to create a barrier liner more than one mile long on the west side of the Elephant Mountain Fire, to protect about 30 homes.

The US Forest Service says some from the fire will likely be visible in Buena Vista and the surrounding area for several days.

Monday afternoon update

Authorities say the fire has spread to 300 acres, and is currently only 5% contained.

Monday morning update

Buena Vista City Schools are closed today because of the Elephant Mountain fire.

It was contained, according to Fire Chief Butch Lawhorn, thanks to the rain overnight.

There is a press briefing scheduled for 8 a.m. at the Department of Forestry Work Center on Route 60.

We're told 150+ acres are still burning.

The fire isn't expected to be put out for the next several days.
