Pop's Ice Cream "surprised" by national recognition

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE -

Pop's Ice Cream in Roanoke is beginning to gain popularity following its national attention.

The small business in Grandin was featured on Esquire Magazine's website for its grilled cheese.

Co-owner Brandon Davis said he found out about his shop's fame the same way we did, through social media.

He said a customer posted it on their Facebook page.

Even though the sampling was a complete surprise, there may have been a clue along the way.

"They were really sneaky," Davis said. "We just got a call to confirm the age of our toast master and it is from the 50's, maybe older. Then I thought why would they call to ask this? Then a week later we saw the thing on Facebook."

Since both are vegetarians, Davis and his wife Anna started cooking grilled cheese at the shop so they would have something to eat.

The ice cream shop now features more than a dozen different grilled cheese sandwiches with ingredients ranging from avocado to apple slices.
