Roanoke offering 10 percent tax cut for energy efficient homes

ROANOKE -

If you're thinking of remodeling your home or building a new one in Roanoke, you now have an incentive to make it more energy efficient.

Roanoke City is offering a 10 percent real estate tax cut over five years for homes that are 30 percent above Virginia's building efficiency standards.

Replacing insulation, windows, an old furnace, or any combination could help you reach that threshold.

So far more than 30 homes and a couple of businesses have taken advantage of the tax credit.

"We have been at the forefront of the green initiative," said Roanoke City Building Commissioner Jeff Shawver. "Whether it's your ride to work or commute to work and we definitely tag it in with building your home or business."

Shawver said this is all part of Roanoke's movement to become a green city.

In 2012 the city installed a green roof on its administrative building.

It also began using all electric cars to enforce downtown parking restrictions.

Both changes come with a greater cost up front, but more savings down the road.

"You've got to practice what you preach," Shawver said. "I go back to what we're doing on our roof. It was a difficult project to put the green roof on our building but the city knows how important that is. So we just want to be leading from the front on this."
