The Manchin-Toomey compromise, that would, for the first time require federal background checks for purchases at gun shows and over the internet, is set for a vote today but it could fail. As of this morning, backers do not have the 60 votes they need.

The American diplomat killed in Afghanistan will be laid to rest this morning. The funeral for 25-year-old Anne Smedinghoff who was one of five Americans killed in a suicide bombing April 6, will be held in her hometown, outside Chicago.

President Barack Obama will welcome wounded warrior cyclists to the south lawn of the White House today for the 7th Annual Soldier Ride. The event helps to raise awareness of service members battling injuries sustained during their military service.

First Lady Michelle Obama will heads to the Naval Academy today before joining Maryland Governor Martin O'Mally when he signs a bill allowing veterans who apply for professional licenses to get credit for their military experience. It's all part of Mrs. Obama's "Joining Forces" initiative, which connects service members, veterans and military spouses with resources to find jobs.

Presbyterian Homes & Family services in Lynchburg and the Family Alliance are hosting a community resources conference starting this morning at 9:00. Its designed to offer day of education and networking for local human and social service organizations through training sessions and vendors.

Today is Senior Fun & Health Fair Day at the Salem Civic Center today from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.. It's free to get in.

The 4th Annual Down by Downtown festival starts today. There will be four days of live music at 12 downtown venues, including an outdoor stage.

A mural to be officially unveiled in Blacksburg this afternoon. The LoveWorks mural on the side of the She Sha building on Draper Road will be shown at 2:30 p.m.. It's part of a social media campaign to share the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation.
