Giles Co. hearing for new outdoor gun range, training facility

Posted: Updated:
GILES COUNTY, VA -

The Giles County Board of Supervisors and Giles County Planning Commission are holding a joint public hearing Thursday.

One of the items on the agenda is the request for a special exception permit to allow for an outdoor firing range and training facility.

According to the application the property is more than 103 acres, located on the land bordered by Route 460, Route 42, and Clover Hollow Road.

The general business plan submitted with the application states the mission is "to develop, operate, and maintain a facility that meets NRA standards and approval in order to provide a place for various types of shooting sports and training in a safe and rural environment." The plan goes onto say a rifle range, handgun range and basic classroom/training facility are a part of the planned facilities.

"Owners are willing to build the rifle and handgun ranges to NRA standards and have a liability policy in place based on these high safety standards" said the application.

At least one Giles resident is concerned about the project.  In an email to WSLS, they said "If such an operation were allowed to exist within the hollow, we believe that the safety of the residents and their livestock would potentially be put in danger, as would the peace and quiet we so cherish.  Having people firing heavy calibre machine guns and conducting such "training" would do nothing to enhance the quality of life here, and would undoubtedly have a negative impact on our way of life and our property values."

The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Giles County General District courtroom located at 120 North Main St. in Pearisburg.

We're reached out to the people listed on the application for a comment, our calls have not been returned.
