NRCC students speak out about shootings

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

M.J. Silcott and Red Lee sit in the classroom where they watched a nightmare unfold.

They witnessed the shooting at the New River Community College's satellite location over video conference from the Dublin campus.

They both describe it as a helpless feeling.

"What do you do? It's like being in a nightmare and not being able to get out," NRCC student M.J. Silcott says.

They say they wanted to was jump through the video conference screen and save their fellow students and professors.

They say all the could hear were gun shots and cries for help.

"It was torture," Silcott says. "You go through all these things in your mind of what could happen, and there's no answers, you don't have answers."

They say for hours, they had to sit and wait. They didn't know if their friends were dead or alive.

"I think that's what really scared us the most, because all we could see was just off camera, we didn't know who or what would be lying on the floor," NRCC student, Red Lee says.

The students were actually meeting to plan a Stop Hunger Now event. They are still having it this Friday starting at 9:30 am. in Dublin. They are renaming it a "Renewed Sense of Purpose."
